The Emerging Artists Series takes place every day of Summerfest. This series highlights up-and-coming local, national and international talent during daily performances that not only showcase great live music, but also engages the audience by having fans vote each day their favorite performance.
We’ve reached out to several of this year’s winners and asked them a few questions about themselves and what it’s like to perform at Summerfest.
This week we hear from brew city's own newvices. Combining both funk and beach tunes, they play with multiple different genres. Featuring Rod Wortham on guitar, Marco Jaimez on vocals, Caleb Rogers on guitar and vocals, Josh Ehlke on drums, and Matt Sherman on bass- newvices creates a lingering sound that gets listeners grooving, thinking, and feeling; with the ultimate goal of bringing solace to a hectic world. This year they performed at Summerfest on June 30 at the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage. Thanks guys for taking the time to answer some questions about your experience.
Q1) What was it like to play in your hometown at a large music festival like Summerfest?
newvices: Summerfest is such a cornerstone of Wisconsin and the beauty of the summer. We are still in disbelief that we were able to play such an amazing event.
Q2) Did you get a chance to experience the festival outside of your performance?
newvices: A few of us saw The NBHD, and it rained so hard that day. There were probably 80 people who just sat in the bleachers, while this group of young girls started singing their favorite songs. That little group gained traction and by the end of it there were people walking up just to sing the song with the crowd. It was amazing to see this first hand. Lex Allen also played that night, and anyone who knows this soon to be super star can vouch for how amazing his live set truly is. We also got to catch Borns and Corey Pieper.
Q3) While at Summerfest this year, was there a favorite song that you performed or perhaps some incredible memorable moment?
newvices: We aren’t a big band by any means. We barely consider ourselves even to the level of a relevant local band; in light of artists like Lex Allen, GGOOLLDD, Reyna, NAN, and many other contributing and beautiful bands that our city has to offer. When we wrote this ep, we were going through a lot of personal things- losing friends to drugs, and just feeling such a disconnect to the world around us. That being said, during our 2nd to last song, we felt the energy as the crowd of both familiar and unfamiliar faces began to sing along. It meant the world. This has been the coolest moment thus far in our careers. We'd love to extend a huge thanks to David for being kind enough to let us play.
Q4) What do you do when you get writers block?
newvices: We are surrounded by so many talented and amazing individuals. This year at a backline event, hosted by 88.9, we met Reyna, specifically Vic of Reyna. She works harder than anyone we’ve ever met, which motivates us to never stop. Jesse of Clear Pioneer (who is one of our favorite if not our favorite band in the city) eats sleeps and pushes himself as a musician and artist to the fullest. Always networking and learning, he seriously pushes us to want to keep writing, and working. When we get in a funk, he shares so much positive energy. Marco also has a cute new puppy, so that also helps us write.
Q5) Is there a stage you would like to perform at the next time you come back to Summerfest?
newvices: The Miller stage! If we could work hard enough to co-headline a stage of that nature, we know we’ve made it to the next step of our career. The crew at Summerfest are all amazing and put so much time and energy into what they do.
Q6) Finally, is there anything you would like to say to your fans who voted for you at this year’s Emerging Artists Series at Summerfest?
newvices: Thank you. We don’t mean it in just as a gratitude towards your vote: but for believing and supporting us as a band. So many people tell artists that they are wasting their times, and that they’d never make it. So many nights go without sleep, and trying to perfect something that just replays over and over in our heads. We are amazed that people even take the time to listen or support us. Thank you all.
